Description of Reproduction
Most Athol Gill reproductions are reasonable apparent to seasoned collectors, though those new to the hobby may easily be fooled by the quality etches. Based in Australia, Gill acid etches have made their way to the United States in the private collections of notable hobbyists, and will likely permeate the marketed in the future. Examples such as the show Black Raven, Kelly Standards, and Kelly Waratahs are most easily recognized by their slightly "cartoonish" etches and the "wavy balloon" style text. The text style is not found in any original American axe maker's marks, stamps, or etches and should be a dead giveaway for fraudulent axes from this maker.
