The markings on an axe crate indicating the weight of the axes contained within are generally apparent if you are familiar with axe sizes. Typically noted in fractional values, a single digit standing alone, or followed by a "half" or "quartered" value is standard. If the crate included a range of sizes, a "X to X" range may be noted.
Occasionally, the weight of an axe included in an axe crate may be standardized as a size or general "type" of axe. For example, a crate of boys axes may simply note "Boys Axes", with the understanding that they are of the standard range for that type of axe. This may be standard size throughout the industry (for boys axes, this was typically a 2.25 pound head), but may also be specific to the manufacturer depending on the date of manufacture.
