Though most makers found the Ohio and Yankee Patterns to be synonymous, a few show distinct differences in the angle of the bit from the toe to the heel. Despite this, the Hiatt Pattern is described by the Rixford Manufacturing Company as an Ohio Pattern “but a quarter inch thicker”. The pattern was first described in the 1880s when the Rixford Manufacturing Company began making axes.
