Scoring Pattern

The Scoring Pattern was marketed towards the phase of timber harvesting and processing known as scoring. During this phase, after the tree had been felled, involved scoring, or marking, the tree into sections and then marking the face in lines (usually with a coal or chalk line) that the hewer would use to remove excess wood leaving the squared timber. The scoring axe was noted as being used to both cut notches for measured lengths in the barked log and for removing the wood and bark between notches in preparation of the hewer. Due to the operation of the scoring axe, the pattern was typically handled on a longer haft. The bit was more flat than rounded in order to avoid digging into usable lumber.
