Gloekler, Bernard
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Bernard Gloekler was a German immigrant born in Blaubeuren, Hausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. After coming to the US with his family, he settled in Pittsburgh where he worked as a Gunsmith in the 1880s. By the 1890s he had switched professions to manufacturing butcher supplies, in Butchers' tools, like cleavers and “killing axes”. His business was quite successful, and in 1892 they built a 6 story factory at 1117 and 1119 Penn Avenue, Pittsburg, PA, where they would expand to craft machinery and fixtures, meat racks, sausage stuffer, and lard presses. Bernard would die in 1911, but his son, Charles, would take over the business and would excel in making devices for ice making and refrigeration.
